Chandelier - Saks Fifth Avenue
This chandelier was one of my first projects after graduating from Industrial Design. It was an amazing chance to use software that I already use on a real world project. I felt extremely lucky to have had the team that I did, everyone was so generous with their time, guidance, and patience.
This was my first truly collaborative project and I loved it. The team consisted of myself, a senior designer, structural engineers, electrical engineers, fabricators, and installers. It was through this project that I learned how a large part of design is communication.
A lot of communication had to happen so that all parties involved understood not only the scope of the project, but also how each team’s job would impact another’s. As part of the design team, I had to consider not only the design of the piece, but the order of operations.
The panels were made in-house on our CNC mill. Each panel consisted of a fire-treated MDF panel and laminated with an acrylic mirror. Labeling happened at the CNC stage for convenience. Each rod had a custom coupling with a twist lock cutout to mate with a receiving plate which was custom waterjet cut.
French cleats were used to attach each panel and the electrical components were done before installation with quick connection points for ease of access. For installation each panel slid into place based on the installation drawings (supplied in multiple views). After connecting the electricals, the final step was to install the rods.
